Moles are small subterranean mammals with velvety fur… and are often considered one of the most well-known garden pests in the United States!
Unfortunately for those of us who live in Springfield Missouri, moles are quite common here.
And if you have ever had a yard or a garden, you’ve probably learned to recognize their distinctive tunnels and mounds.
Though moles aren’t all bad, they do cause significant damage to lawns and gardens. They can damage the root systems of your plants, kill grass, dig-up your yard, and cause plenty of frustration!
Of course, moles are not the only type of creature that digs up the lawn!
So the first step to getting rid of moles is diagnosing the problem!
Gophers, voles, and moles can all do extensive damage to your lawn and garden.
But how do you know that moles are the culprit?
Moles leave mole-hills that are round, with the highest point of the mound being at the top!
This is different than the mounds left by gophers, which pile dirt more toward one side.
It is also different from voles, which don’t leave mounds! Voles leave exposed open holes with small networks of trails and tunnels.
Identifying mole mounds and tunnels is the easy part.
How do you get rid of them?
Here are 3 of our favorite DIY methods.
1. Set Traps

One method for getting rid of moles is to set traps.
Some people aren’t a huge fan of this method, because it requires a bit of prep work and practice.
Plus, you need to buy and set the traps.
With that being said, traps can be pretty effective for getting rid of moles - and are probably the best DIY method at your disposal.
Traps are also legal to use in the state of Missouri, as long as the moles being trapped are causing damage to your property.
2. Smoke Them Out With Road Flares
This is a less common method for getting rid of moles and gophers. But it can be effective.
To smoke the moles out, all you will need is a road flare and a screwdriver.
Use a screwdriver to find the tunnel. You may need to check around the mounds - but the tunnel should be pretty easy to find. Once your screwdriver goes into the ground easily - bingo!
Next, insert the non-burning end of the road flare down into the tunnel, to make sure that it will fit.
Once you’re sure that it will fit correctly, pull it back out.
Now light it, and push the burning end down into the tunnel.
Cover it with some dirt so that the smoke doesn’t escape. Now, you should be smoking the moles out!
Note: Do not attempt this method if there is a fire weather warning! It can start a grass fire if you aren’t careful.
That would do far more damage than the moles!
3. Mole-Killing Poisonous Earth Worms

If traps aren’t your thing, or if you don’t really like the idea of smoking the moles out - these Tomcat Mole Killer worms may be your next best bet.
You can buy a case of 10 worms for about $22.
The downside to this method is that it doesn’t always work. There is an art to setting the worms up, and it takes some time to figure out which tunnels are active and which ones aren’t.
But if you’re patient, determined, and willing to commit some time to the ordeal, planting the worms can be significantly effective.
Plus, with this method, you won’t have to bother with traps!
Unfortunately, Most Popular Natural Remedies Don’t Work For Moles
We’ve heard of people using cayenne pepper, mothballs, dish detergent, sticks of gum, and even ammonia to try to get rid of them!
To be really honest, even mole pellets, which are literally designed to get rid of moles, don’t work out very well.
Unfortunately, while these methods can make life a bit more difficult for your pesky local mole population, they do very little to actually solve the problem.
If you read about mole removal online, you may even hear that one way to remove moles is to shoot them!
In theory, this can work. But in practice, it rarely does the trick.
Moles are pretty resilient little pests! And honestly, the best way to get rid of them is to contact your local Springfield Mo. pest control service!
A professional pest removal service can diagnose the problem, figure out the best way to solve it, and get rid of your moles for good!
